Why You Might Not Know As Much About A Person As You Think

How many friends or family members do you think you know everything about? How about strangers? We take one look at a person and we assume we know what “type” they are. We use past experiences to make prejudices before really getting to know them.

For example, if you told me you’re an only child I usually assume “spoiled”. If you’re an older white male who golfs, I assume “closed minded & privileged” These were two assumptions I had made recently about two individuals, and I was way off.

There’s a lovely quote by Michelle Obama that goes “it’s harder to hate up close” and I think that’s true for judging others as well.

I learned that the person who was an only child was actually abandoned by a parent and was in and out of foster care.

I learned that the white male golfer has been practicing buddhist meditations for over 20 years and loves talking about mindfulness and consciousness.

How well do we really know the people around us? Probably not as well as we thought.
